Pudding Seminar: "Do Early Externalising Behaviours Predispose to Later Schizotypy and Crime"

"Do Early Externalising Behaviours Predispose to Later Schizotypy and Crime" - Keri Wong, MCR

Location: Sidgwick Hall

"Donnie Darko", "Jacobs Ladder", "Shutter Island", and the award winning film *A Beautiful Mind" all capture a glimpse of what it’s like to be schizophrenic. Filled with special effects and climatic music, the gripping, crime-filled storyline often leaves us feeling breathless, and perhaps, slightly more biased in our understanding of schizophrenia patients who, for most of us, may never encounter in real life.

Over the last three decades, large-scale epidemiological studies of clinical and criminal populations have propelled the field to better understand the causes of schizophrenia and crime. Research on the social, biological risk factors and developmental pathways have facilitated intervention and treatment efforts for schizophrenia. Along the same vein however, little is known on just why schizophrenia and crime (i.e., homicide) are related and whether one precedes the other at a subclinical level.

Moving beyond just establishing relationships in clinical populations, this paper extends from the schizophrenia-crime literature to examine the relationship between schizotypal personality (SPD; a ‘sub-form’ of schizophrenia) and aggressive antisocial behaviour. Using data from a large-scale longitudinal study in Mauritius (*Mauritius Child Health Project, 1972*), I will attempt to tease apart some of these important relationships developmentally in hopes to answer some of the gaps in the literature. Please join me in my efforts to share and better understand schizophrenia. I look forward to hearing your ideas and questions!
