KT Bosse-Foy, MCR: 'From Fascism to Socialism in Four Years: the Soviet Occupation Zone in Germany, 1945-49'
On 7 May 1945, Nazi Germany surrendered unconditionally to the Allied Powers, bringing the fascist era in Germany to an end. Only four years later, on 7 October 1949, the socialist German Democratic Republic was established. So how was this new political system introduced? The GDR remains a contentious topic among scholars, with opinions on it ranging from 'a brutal communist dictatorship' to the claim that 'Stalin never wanted to establish the GDR'. This seminar will discuss how the GDR was created from the ruins of Nazi Germany by examining the actions and
motivations of those involved.
To allow people to get to 2 pm appointments, please note that coffee and cake will be available from 1 o'clock with the Seminar starting promptly at 1.15 pm. All Senior Members, Students, and Staff are welcome. Coffee, cake, and lively discussion as usual! N-J Steinke/D Mordey
