Bursaries and grants

Luckily both the University and Newnham offer financial aid in the form of grants, bursaries and loans, in varying amounts. Your tutor will be able to help you out with information about these funds; so don't worry. Here are a few of the main funds available, but there are many more:

·         Cambridge bursaries: These are worth up to £3000, for all home students receiving LEA grants, but on a sliding scale dependent on your financial situation.

·         University Access to Learning Funds: Again, university wide, generally for those who have to pay rent over the vacation, either in College, or in their own accommodation.

·         College bursaries: from £250-£1000, and awarded on the same basis as the Newton Trust bursaries, but also on individual need.

·         Room bursaries: Varying amounts of up to £150 per year, deducted from your College bill in Lent term.

·         Emergency funds: Available for those who find themselves in financial crisis.

·         Book grants: All students are entitled to a grant which covers a percentage (around 30-40%, though it varies) of any books they've brought as long as they are course-related and you have the receipt.

·         Travel grants: All students are encouraged to apply for travel grants, and more money is awarded if the travel is related to your course. There are separate funds especially for linguists and geographers. All projects are considered and a very large number of Newnhamites are aided in vacation adventures and projects!

·         Music funds: College has Music Organizer bursaries and Instrumental and Vocal Awards, in addition to Choral Scholarships and University Instrumental Awards. A special fund also exists for help towards music lessons for those not reading music.
