Newnham Crest

Newnham College JCR

Welfare

There’s a great number of people here to support you (and even the list below isn’t exhaustive), so please don’t hesitate to contact anyone, no matter how small or big you think your problem.

College Welfare Team

Tutor

You can always go to your tutor with any problems you may be having, personal (inside or outside Cambridge) or academic. Times for your tutor’s weekly drop-in sessions are posted outside their office, and are also usually emailed round at the beginning of each term. Your tutor is there to help you with things as simple as signing a travel grant form, all the way through to larger scale issues like helping you through the degrading process, so don’t be afraid to talk to them. If you don’t get on with your assigned tutor, it’s acceptable in Newnham to approach any of the tutors, so feel free to do so.

The College Nurse

Mrs. Patsy Glazebrook’s office is on first floor Fawcett (above the Linen Room) and her office hours are posted just outside the door. She’s really lovely and a great resource for students, especially when if you don’t yet feel like visiting you GP. Whether you’re starting to feel a bit ill with Freshers’ Flu, worried about a friend’s health or feeling a bit down, you can always pop over to see her.

The Porters

How would we all manage without the porters? They’re such an invaluable resource. Most of us know that they’re great when you’ve locked yourself out of your room or brilliant in that exciting moment when you realise you’ve got post, but they can also help out with more than that. They have pretty much everyone’s contact details, so in an emergency they should always be a first point of call (and you can literally call by just picking up any white emergency phone in college). They’re also great for pointing you in the right direction for any general queries you may have.

The JCR Welfare Team

Welfare Officer

My job as welfare officer is pretty wide-ranging. I’m here as a point of contact for you about anything related to your welfare. And I mean anything. I’m available for you to come and chat to confidentially; either drop me an email or stop by my Newnham Café sessions (4.30-6.30 on Fridays in the Bar) to arrange a time. You can also email me with questions you may have, and, when I don’t know, I can point you in the right direction. I have lots of information from the University Counselling Service (an amazing resource in itself) about all sorts of welfare issues, as well as lots of contacts I can refer you to (I can also make the contact on your behalf as well if you want). So don’t think that your problem may seem too small to bother me with or too large for me to help you handle – I’m here to help you be happy and healthy during your time in Cambridge if you let me. I’m available by email at jcr.welfare@newn.cam.ac.uk, and the Porters have all my contact details on file in case of emergency as well. Along with the women’s and LGBT officers, I have free condoms, lube and pregnancy tests for all JCR students. You can also buy cheap security alarms from me.

Education and Disabilities Officer

My name is Helen and I am here to help you with any issues you may have concerning academic affairs in Cambridge. Perhaps, your supervision group is too large or you want to find out how to change your tripos. Any students with disabilities (whether new or long-standing) affecting their degree can also approach me with questions they may have. I can be contacted on jcr.acdemics@newn.cam.ac.uk.

Women’s Officer

LGBT Officer

Francesca is there to help you with any LBGT-related issues you may have during your time at Newnham. For more details, check the LBGT tab on the website. She can be contacted on jcr.lbg@newn.cam.ac.uk.
